The first thing I noticed about Ranger's Apprentice, by John Flanagan, was the similarity to The Last Apprentice. Both books involved a boy who thought he was a nobody, being brought on as an apprentice to a mysterious man. As Thomas Ward, from that book is an apprentice to the Spook, Will is an apprentice of one of the Rangers.
({[Warning: Spoiler-Heavy Ahead!]})
The Rangers are a group of people who specialize in being unseen, as well as tracking threats. Will desperately wants to be part of the Battleschool, but finds that besides having no last name, he isn't what they were looking for. A Ranger known as Halt suggests something to the Baron ( the person who took in Will and a few other orphans), and Will feels obligated to find out. In the middle of the night, he sneaks into the Baron's office, but it turns out that Halt was testing him. Given that Will made it past the guards and scaled the tower, Halt knew Will would make a good apprentice. After long hours (days, months . . ) of cleaning and training, Will and a couple others, including some of the other Rangers, as well as some knights, set out to stop the plans of Morgorath, the exiled Lord, and main antagonist in the series.
Overall, I'd give this book a 4.5 out of 5, as it was similar to The Last Apprentice. I'm reccomending this book for anyone who wants something like The Last Apprentice.
