Nightstrike's Reviews: Velocitron Cosmos!

Over the holiday, I received quite the surprise in terms of gifts, and this little gremlin was one of them! Normally I'm not a fan of the sunbow designs, but despite whatever misgivings that led to me not opting for this quickly vanished once I handled the figure.

Robot Mode

Cosmos is part of the Velocitron Speedia 500 Collection, so once more, if you want to amuse yourself, you could put down his product name as Transformers Legacy - Velocitron Speedia 500 Collection Deluxe Class Sunbow Universe Autobot Cosmos. But for simplicity's sake, I'll just refer to him either as Velocitron, or even just Legacy.

With that out of the way, Cosmos is a small Deluxe, meant to be consistent with the scale set by the WFC trilogy. It seems like with every big shift in the brand, Hasbro adopts a new scale chart of some sort. Nonetheless, he still feels quite worthwhile. In terms of hollow parts, which can be a minor deal-breaker for some, but not for me, his forearms have gaps from where his fists fold in, with no internal molded details. However his legs are broken up in such a way as to mask the hollowness.

Transformation, in broad strokes, obviously draws from the original, but with quite a few changes. Instead of the full sides of the vehicle mode becoming his arms, it's roughly 3/4, with the front 1/4 attached to the feet, and flipping around to serve as heels. The back of the disc becomes a stabilizing section for the arms, shifting it up to line up with the torso/cockpit. Instead of the head popping out, the top flips around revealing the ball-jointed head.

As for accessories, he comes with a blaster, and a checkered flag that can use the blaster as a stick for it. It's rather amusing when you consider just how trigger-happy Cosmos was in the G1 comics.

Vehicle Mode

Cosmos' vehicle mode is distinctive, and quite unique compared to his fellow minibots. Where most of them became Earth-based vehicles, Cosmos is modelled after the "Adamsky Saucer." Why he'd pick that as a disguise, I'm not quite sure, but subsequent media have depicted it as more of a Space-station/satellite, so that's what I'm going with. The vehicle mode itself is straightforward, well-painted, and very solid. On the top of it, the surface detail is even painted to look like top of his head in robot mode. His gun can plug onto the side, while the flag can plug into the shallow port on the back.

Overall

All in all, I quite like this one! Getting him on the secondary market is a pain, though, but luckily mine had been straight from the case. If you have the chance, I definitely recommend this one, even if you're not a huge fan of the character. He's quite fun to mess with. Final Rating: 5/5
