Nightstrike's Reviews: The Lost Years of Merlin

The Lost Years of Merlin, by T.A. Barron, is quite an interesting installment in the stories of Merlin, the famous wizard from Arthurian legend. Merlin, or Emrys, as he was known then, wakes up on the shore with no memory of who he is, and where he is from. Alongside him, lies Branwen, who claims to be his mother, but Emrys has doubts about what she says.

Years later, when the pair have moved into a nearby village, Emrys finds himself being harassed by Dinatius, a boy who taunts him about his pointed ears, and Branwen healing others. When Dinatius comes into their home, along with a few others, he drags the pair to a fire to get rid of them. However, that's when things become really dangerous. Emrys, in a burst of rage, wields magic, causing a burning tree to fall on Dinatius. Emrys is wounded as well, and wakes up blind, but after having wished to see once more, He discovers his second sight. Emrys leaves to find out his origins, and arrives on the island his mother mentioned -- Fincayra, a land between Heaven and Earth. While there, he meets many ofits inhabitants, such as Rhia, a girl who aids in stopping the king, and Shim, a little giant with a big heart. Eventually, Emrys learns that the fate of Fincayra lies in his hands.

Overall, I'd rate this book a 4.5 out of 5, as the descriptions for some of the characters were rather sparse. I'd reccomend this book to anyone who is interested in Arthurian legend, and is curious about how Merlin got his name.
