Let me begin by saying that I did not expect this book to be part of a series. I had thought it was a stand-alone novel, and after flipping through a few pages, realized it was a prequel to the Repairman Jack series. Despite all that, I enjoyed the book. Now for those of you who have not read the Repairman Jack books (I haven't) this book is somewhere between sci-fi and fantasy, and focuses on the adventures of Jack, a young boy who, along with his friends Louise(a.k.a. Weezy) and Eddie, discovers a body in a burial mound in Pine Barrens, NJ.
({[Warning: Spoiler-Heavy Ahead!]})
Alongside the body, they discovered a strange cube that contained a pyramid with ancient markings. What made the cube strange, is that it was just a single sheet of some kind of alloy, that when folded into a cube, could only be opened by Jack, and a few other people. The pyramid had markings that appeared to be cut with a laser, but the ancient civilizations from which those markings were from, did not have access to such technology. What was even stranger, is that when dated, the cube and pyramid were from before human civilizations even began. Jack and friends eventually find themselves uncovering secrets kept from people for a long time, and find out that the history of the world isn't what people thought.
Overall, I'd rate this book a 4 out of 5, as a few things in the end could have been done better.
