Nightstrike's Reviews: The Last Apprentice - Revenge Of The Witch

The Last Apprentice, by Joseph Delaney, is an interesting book, and is yet another that departs from my usual selections. This book is set in a semi-medieval(?) era, and focuses upon the apprenticeship of Thomas Ward, a seventh son of a seventh son.

However, his apprenticeship is not for anything typical in this book's setting. His six other brothers each are taking jobs, such as farming, forging (as in blacksmith, in case you were wondering...), and working for the butcher. However, Tom is the last one to get a job, and there is only one left -- the Spook. This job mainly focuses on stopping anything supernatural, whether it involves witches, ghasts, ghosts, or boggarts. Old Gregory, the resident Spook, has tried for a long time to train an apprentice, and has gone through many. Some were to weak, some quit, and some died. Thomas is the last one, and ends up faring better than his predecessors. Despite his success, there are dangers that he faces, such as the return of vengeful witches, and a previous apprentice turned into a ghast.

Overall, I would give this book a 4.5 out of 5 (Spook just doesn't sound right as a title) and expect the rest of the series to be just as great!
