Normally, I'm not a huge fan of fantasy, though there are the rare few that catch my interest. Beyonders, is a good example, but I'm not here to review that. Instead I'm going to review the second book in a series that has me hooked. The Copper Gauntlet, by Holly Black and Cassandra Clare, is part of the Magisterium Series, and follows the life and adventures of Callum Hunt. This series has its fair share of locations, but the most prominent, would be at the Magisterium. For those of you who have not read the first book, the Magisterium is a school where people learn how to use magic. At first, it does appear to be a parody of Hogwarts, from the popular Harry Potter series, but readers will soon realize that it is far from it.
[({Warning: Spoiler-heavy ahead!})]
As it is nigh impossible to review this book, without providing spoilers, I'll just go ahead and provide them. (I promise to try and keep it light, though . . . ) Call and his friends, Aaron and Tamara, have gone through the first of the many trials they are to face, and passed his Iron Year. This book starts off during his summer break, after the events that had unfolded. His father suspects him of being evil, and possibly in league with the Enemy of Death (If you haven't read the first book, I'm not going to bother explaining who he is). After an unfortunate discovery in his basement, Call runs off, and spends the summer with Tamara, finding that she has more hospitality than Call's father. Once the school-year begins, Call feels safe, though that feeling fades when he discovers the Alkahest has been stolen (Again, not going to explain, so please read this series!). The clock is ticking as Call races to find his father, and true intentions are revealed. What I noticed right away was Call's "Evil-Overlord-Score" (Hint: It has to do with the Enemy of Death.). It becomes a little funny how obsessed with it, he is despite his reasoning.
Overall I'd rate this book a 4.5 out of 5, mainly due to how fast the summer break went by. It's a great book, within a great book series (An uncommon thing these days). Maybe you should consider reading it . . .
