Nightstrike's Reviews: Abandon (...All Hope, Ye Who Read This!)

Those of you who have been following social media may be aware of a kit that I have been producing, and some of you might have noticed small details on the parts. I unfortunately cannot tell you what the endgame is, but I can say . . . it's going to be a certain three-fingered metallurgist's worst nightmare.

Abandon, by Blake Crouch, (yes, I'm reviewing YET another one of his books) is a standalone novel, but a well-written one at that. Seeing as I can't praise certain sections and gripe over others without spoiling too much, here:

Most of Crouch's writing certainly leans towards the supernatural and science-fiction, which is what Abandon seems to fall into at first, but later we see that this is merely a tale of greed. While the general idea is very much Hardy Boys-esque, the execution was amazing . . . though all the twists had my head spinning! The story starts off with a look into the past of a gold-mining town called Abandon, and starts off the modern story with a bang. Abigail Foster is the main character of this novel, though she is not very active, instead leaving most of the fighting to the rest of the crew that was going to be exploring the abandoned town. Before I continue, I should mention that their intention was NOT to take photos of supernatural phenomena, but rather to retrieve the gold that was supposedly lost. I won't spoil the rest, but I will mention that there are ex-Marines involved, and it becomes very hard to keep track of who's on which side.

This was, overall, a great book. My only complaint, is that it seemed rather rushed and the way things were tied up was rather hard to follow.
