Nightstrike's Reviews: Ready Player One

You've likely heard of this movie, by now, but did you know it started off as a book? Ready Player One, is a sci-fi/dystopian novel focusing on the character Wade Watts as he goes in and out of a virtual reality simulation called the OASIS. Right off the bat, I can give you one piece of information:

This book is FULL of 80's references.

If you're like me, and are a hardcore Transformers-fan, then you may get some of these references, and others not so much. This book mentions things from Macross to Gobots and Transformers to Mazinger. But what makes the references a little out of place are things such as the setting, as well as the characters themselves. OASIS started off as a virtual escape from the terrible things going on in the world. It was a massive "universe," where you could hang out, do business, and even go to school, somewhat anonymously. The creator of the OASIS, James Halliday died but he left a "Will." He had an obsession with the 80's, and created an Easter Egg in the game, but to find it, one needed to unlock three gates, and beat challenges, usually revolving around classic arcade games.

Right away this book seems a little odd, but the general theme of it, is based off of these references. It has a good deal of action, as well as plenty of humor. If you're looking for something like The Eye Of Minds but, with a lighter note, then this is good for you. The only thing that bothered me, was the continuous focus on the 80's, but it is explainable, given Halliday's goal for the contest.
