We've all heard of James Dashner's The Maze Runner series, but more recently, he's started a new series, starting with The Eye Of Minds. I don't need to go into too much detail about this book, seeing as it already possesses similarities to other books and movies. To sum it up, Michael, the protagonist, goes onto an advanced Virtual Reality game, dubbed the VirtNet. (Really creative naming!) Things aren't exactly perfect in this virtual reality, though, as news reports are saying one gamer has been taking hostages, and even killing them.
Warning: Only Lightly Spoiler-ish Ahead!
The reason I'm not delving too much into the book, is that it's all an important part of a rather shocking moment at the end, and I don't want anyone to figure it out before then. There are a few details I can share with you, though.
First of all, Michael is supposedly a skilled programmer/hacker. This will come into play later on. In the very beginning of the book, the gamer is revealed, with Michael trying to stop a suicide inside the virtual reality. A girl is trapped and can't leave, but she decides the only way to leave, is to rip out her Core, the implant that allows one to survive in the virtual reality. She is so afraid of the gamer, Kaine, that she rips out her Core, and jumps off a bridge. This isn't exactly the cheeriest of scenes, but there's reason for that. Agent Weber, and the VNS (VirtNet Security), have been watching Michael for a while, and decided that now was the time to act. Kaine has been labeled a "Cyber-terrorist," and the VNS needs Michael to track down Kaine.
Right away my interest was drawn. I have a love for Sci-fi/Fantasy/Dystopian books. This one wasn't a stereotypical fiction, especially with how it ended. The characters were perfectly written, and lifelike, with reasonable reactions to what was going on around them. This book is one of the few to ever receive a rating this high, but I think it deserves it. The only thing that would have given it a perfect score, is if the background information and setting were introduced in the beginning. Despite my knowing what the general location was, I still had to try and piece stuff together.
Final Rating: 4.9 out of 5.
