"To be First Kind is to bring about the arrival of a new kind of human that can compete in a world that is not of their making; a world where things are not as they seem. Dr. Lombard has a proposal. He will create an above species of Human to fight against the inevitable tide of technology that will usher in the dawn of human extinction at the hands of the Humanaforms.
But will Corporate America withstand the oncoming war long enough to survive? Or will it be devoured by long standing political interests, lusts and greed?
Thus the Synth Project is born."

Or so the summary on the back says...
Before I get started, this book is a proof-copy. Yes, that means you can't get it(yet). However, I was tasked with reading and partially revising it. For those who are curious, First Kind, by David Lettire, is a sci-fi book, set in a semi-dystopian future. So, right away, it got my interest. Synthetic humans? Robotic doppelgangers? Count me in! This book does have its fair share of errors here and there, and I will address a few of them, but other than that, the story itself is amazing.
({[Warning: Not overly Spoiler-Heavy Ahead!]})
First of all, they are quite a few grammar and punctuation errors, but it is understandable. When writing, one wants to get their idea out first. Also, there are quite a few areas that seemed rather rushed, but did get the point across. For instance, not much explanation went into how Zade was able to control his duplicates(ala Transformers Magmatron's components . . . "Divide and conquer"?) Next, there wasn't too much explanation as to how things got the way they were. For instance, did a scientist(or 20) come up with the technology? If so, does the world no longer have concern about achievements, or have recent debates such as net neutrality been lost, and informational spread has gone back to the way it was in the 1700's and 1800's? Besides that, though I don't really have major complaints about the book. I won't continue, though, as I'd end up giving away the actual plot of the book, and (possibly) lower profit for the author.
Also, this book appears to be part of a series, due to the cliffhanger ending, and the loose ends, such as the fate of several characters.
Overall, I would rate this proof copy a 4.5 out of 5, due to the unique plot, characters, and humor scattered throughout. I'd recommend it for anyone wanting to read the other sci-fi/dystopian books I've reviewed.
Stay tuned for more reviews, and more updates on a certain batty senator. I aim to have a final color prototype, this week, if not this weekend. I'm currently revising the ball-joints, so that they're ideal for both Shapeways, and printing at home.
